Creative Communication in Employer Branding

Only 13% of employees worldwide are engaged at work

Just making employees aware of mission and vision statement of an organization is just not enough to engage employees. More often than not it has been observed that mid/ junior level employees and leadership team work in silos. There is a big communication gap that exists, which results in lack of unanimity. According to Gallup´s State of the Global Workplace study, only 13% of employees worldwide are engaged at work. In other words, only about one in eight workers are psychologically committed to their jobs and likely to be making positive contributions to their organizations. The bulk of employees worldwide – 63% – are “not engaged,” meaning they lack motivation and are less likely to invest discretionary effort in organizational goals or outcomes. And 24% are “actively disengaged,” indicating they are unhappy and unproductive at work and liable to spread negativity to coworkers.

It has become imminent now to focus on employee engagement for an organization to increase its productivity and profitability. So, what is the top most priority to raise the engagement index? Communication. One of the standard tool that has been overly exploited for the same is company email. Corporate communication over email often doesn’t catch the attention of the email user which causes an important business information gets unnoticed. Furthermore, it adds to the clutter and lands into delete folder.

Role of Social media in engaging employees

Over the last few years there are several steps taken to radically change the communication model from “information based” to “engagement based” communication. Surge of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram are now finding its place in internal corporate communication. While this does pose a threat of leaking proprietary and confidential information, if used prudently can bring in a dramatic shift in employee engagement. To avoid company policies violation, there are several ways to adopt social networking site by private messaging, closed user group or by employing Yammer like social media. But, is that enough.

Leadership connect

Employee satisfaction is another avenue which drives employee motivation and in turn engagement level. Apart from compensation and benefits, significant percentage of employee satisfaction is driven by praise and recognition. Appreciation in a gathering or at a media having a high visibility will have a large impact on employee satisfaction. Frequent leadership connects also drives the employee motivation. However, there are challenges in connecting with employees physically as the workplaces are geographically distributed. So, it is very important to invest on an engaging medium to connect with employees who works from different locations.

Visual communication

Study shows engagement levels and interaction with images are significantly higher than elaborate texts. It becomes more effective if the communication is done through moving images – videos. To address these whole gamut of communication and engagement paradigms no one communication media is apt. Organization must ensure to adopt strategies to efficiently use appropriate medium as per the internal communication plan. One of the emergent medium which is slowly and emphatically gaining position in employee communication and engagement is Digital Signage. This medium is creating revelations through its effectiveness as the messages can be tailored as per the target employee demographics and blown out on the big attention grabbing screens with compelling visual appeal.

Engage your employees with Digital Signage

With Digital Signage, communications in form of images and videos can be projected and targeted. Amalgamation of Social feeds in Digital Signage has become very exciting. Digital displays can be transformed into an interactive bulletin board where messages can flow in through Facebook comments and tweets. Likes & follow on an Instagram photo posted by communication team on a TV display in a cafeteria will become a measure for effectiveness and engagement level of the campaign. Leadership connects with employees from different locations can happen over videos. Employee awards and recognition can be broadcast over the Digital Signage network to all TV displays within the organization. Important announcements and business communications pertaining to various business units like HR, Finance, Marketing, Sales, IT can be more engaging and will not go unnoticed though Digital Signage. Through diligent use of Digital signage technology all these can be achieved and much more.

With the advent of new technology in Digital Signage, it is becoming very flexible to adopt and more economical. Organizations like Intel and Cisco are embracing Digital signage to engage with their employees. So, it is worth exploring the possibility of having an interactive corporate TV channel based on Digital Signage and engage employees.

Capturing employee attention – cut the clutter

It is said that as humans we receive 2 billion bits of information every second. So it is no surprise that the flood of information that I find myself daily submerged in seems to produce more pain than gain. And it’s not just the e-mail messages and SMS messages- . It’s also the vast ocean of information I am compelled to go thru just to stay relevant on my job! I am sure all you out there share my sentiments.Recent research suggests that people took an average of nearly 25 minutes to return to a work task after an e-mail interruption, implying therefore that the ever increasing volume of information can adversely impact productivity.

That’s bad news for both individuals and their organizations. In this scenario, how can one capture the employee’s attention without being intrusive and overwhelming?

There’s hope, though. Innovative tools and techniques promise relief for those of us struggling with information inundation. Using a visual communication platform helps in breaking through this clutter and reaching out to the audience when they are ready to receive the message.

A psychologist, Jerome Bruner reveals that people remember a good 80% of things they see as compared to 20% to that they read and 10% of what they hear.

Therefore if a message is critical, it is best delivered visually through use of imagery and infographics.
